Choosing a maternity pillow

You're thinking about getting a maternity pillow but you don't know which model to pick. Let's see what's currently available on the market, then i will give you my personal opinion about each model. There are roughly five kinds of maternity pillow:

The maternity pillow: This consists of two pillows attached with Velcro. This pillow supports both the belly and the lower back simultaneously while the mother sleeps between the pillows. You can also use it for breastfeeding support. This is a very simple pillow and it is usually not expensive(around 40-50$)

The Bean: This maternity pillow has the shape of a kidney bean so that it wraps from under the belly to between the knees. Doctors, physical therapists and chiropractors recommend the bean pillow because of its ability to provide more than adequate support. These pillows come in various styles. The material used in these pillows is fluid proof, anti-microbial, and fire proof.

The wedge: This maternity pillow is wedged under the belly to provide simple support. It's pretty inexpensive but according to a lot of woman it's not the best out there, it slips out regularly. Try it, it won't break the bank (around 10$)

The full-length body pillow: These are around five feet long and support the back, belly and knees. These pillows are an affordable option since they may be purchased at almost any store that sells bedding. Beware as it can be huge, you'd better have a king size bed ! A very nice model, even for the husband.

The snoogle : see my previous post about it. A great model, my wife's fav.

some good brands to check out : boppy , leachco , bean products

The pregnancy pillow scientifically accepted

I'd like to start off with an excerpt form the "The Australian & New Zealand journal of obstetrics & gynaecology" (Thomas IL, Nicklin J, Pollock H, Faulkner K) to show you how healthy the pregnancy pillow is, it is no hyped gadget : "Royal Women's Hospital, Brisbane.

The effect of a wedge-shaped pillow (Ozzlo pillow) was compared with a standard hospital pillow, used to support the abdomen of a pregnant woman while lying on her side, in preventing or alleviating backache and backache-related insomnia; 92 women at 36 weeks' gestation completed the study. Backache was found to be very common (87%), the onset of pain occurring before 29 weeks in 59%. Age, parity, previous backache and type of bed used did not correlate with the backache scores during the period of study. Lower scores for backache were recorded by women in the week they used the Ozzlo pillow compared with the week they used the standard pillow. Sleeping was deemed better by the patient with the Ozzlo pillow, though actual sleeping scores did not corroborate this. While significantly more felt the Ozzlo pillow was superior to a standard pillow for backache and sleeping, some found both methods helpful. The simple measure of supporting the abdomen with a pillow when in lateral recumbency is likely to benefit many women in late pregnancy. A wedge-shaped pillow of the Ozzlo type, conforming to the shape of the abdomen and supporting it more closely, may be of greater help than a standard cushion or pillow."

The snoogle pregnancy pillow

My wife and many friends have been using one. It's one of the best shape out there. What is it ? The Snoogle is a flexible full-body pillow that follows the natural contours of the body to give the right support to sleep comfortably on the side, the best position for you and your growing baby. The horseshoe-shaped section supports your head and can be adjusted to the correct thickness. The long section of the Snoogle supports your back and tummy. The curved end tucks between your knees, supporting your lower back and keeping your upper thighs apart so you can stay cool and comfortable. After your baby is born, you can use the Snoogle to cushion your baby while breastfeeding. It's tested and approved by your host :) Find out what moms say about it at leachco's website : Snoogle pregnancy pillow reviews
